How’s your mixed prints game?! Know when it works and when it doesn’t? Mixing prints swings between a hyper trend and a forgotten technique but this style staple is always a great way to personalize and remix your wardrobe. I had so much on Great Day Houston this week showing how to mix prints like a pro.

Mixing prints can be intimidating but here are a few techniques to make it easier. In a successful combo, color, print style and print size are where you’ll want to focus your attention to see if a combo works!

Print Neutrals

Consider stripes, florals, polka dots, and animal prints your print neutrals. They  pair well together most of the time and are good base prints to pair with other prints.

Abstract and Aztec

Another great mixing technique is mixing the major and minor colors (bonus: this works whether you have a print or not!) When you look at a print, what is the dominate (major) color and what is the minor color? Whatever the minor color is, use that color as the major color of the coordinating piece. In this case, the shorts are primarily pink and gold so we pulled out the minor color with these similar style prints.

Medallion and Patchwork

Print size is especially key when you have two busy prints like these. If the prints were the same size, well, just don’t do that. ;-) The shirt’s small-medium print size pairs well with the larger patchwork print. We’re also using the same major/minor color technique mentioned above.

Mix in Accessories

If print mixing makes you nervous, make it happen with your accessories! Keep your print styles similar like we’ve done here (bold stripes, colorblocking, and geo prints) for a successful combination.

Texture Mixing

Texture is one of the biggest trends this spring and summer. Though usually found in solid hues, mixing textures follows the same rules as mixing prints. Keep print style consistent and vary texture sizes!
