If you have worked with an image consultant, watched one on TV, or simply stared at yourself in the mirror wearing an ill-fitting top, you know the importance of wearing clothes that fit you properly!
In today’s mass-produced world that means unleashing your sewing skills on homemade clothes or investing in a close personal relationship with a tailor. Though I will always advocate for investing in tailoring at $30 for waist, $15-20 for hems, $25-30 for sleeves, and $100 for shoulders, even with only one or two changes needed, the cost of a custom fit can add up.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there were stores who offered complimentary alterations on in-store purchases?
I roamed a few Houston streets to put together a list of stores that offer that wonderful service and here is what I found:
HOUSTON BOUTIQUES
Norton Ditto (Men)
Norton Ditto has two stores, one in the Woodlands and one near West Ave on W Alabama. The store is celebrating it’s 106th anniversary in Houston and though they have dabbled in women’s clothing, they are exclusively a men’s shop. With popular brands like Robert Graham, Bugatchi Uomo, Tommy Bahama, Ralph Lauren Black, Bertigo, Nat Nast and a wealth of others, Norton Ditto offers complimentary alterations on any nips and tucks you need to make to your purchases.
Leslie & Co (Women)
Leslie & Co has been a Houston staple for over 40 years. Located on Voss at San Felipe, the store carries a colorful array of women’s sportswear, dresses, and pants including brands like Trina Turk, Joy Joy, Kut, and many others. Any alterations needed to make the garment look like it’s made for you are complimentary.
Basiques (Women)
Basiques, located in Uptown Park, specializes in staple investment separates to seamlessly carry you from desk-to-dinner in style. The line is typically comprised of 20-30 pieces at any one time with various color and fabric options available to order. Basiques offers complimentary alterations for any nips and tucks you need to create a custom fit.
NATIONAL STORES
Brooks Brothers (Men & Women)
Brooks Brothers Galleria, know for their preppy suiting and sportswear, comps minor suiting alterations including pant hems and waist and blazer sleeves.
French Connection (Men & Women)
French Connection, located in the Galleria, and primarily known for their women’s clothing, offers complimentary hemming on men’s suit pants as they arrive unfinished.
Billy Reid (Men & Women)
Billy Reid, based in Alabama and recently featured as one of GQ’s top men’s stores, offers complimentary alterations on men’s pants. The store, located in West Ave across from Tootsies, also has a Made-to-Measure line where you can create a completely custom look.
Nordstrom (Men & Women)
If you have spent any time in Nordstrom, connected with them on Twitter, or had to make a return, you know the store is big on customer service. The Galleria retailer offers $100-unlimited dollars in complimentary alterations based on your Nordstrom Level (loyalty card). Everyone starts off as a Level 1 with $100/yr alterations credit.
