This week’s Twitter and Facebook #nwdt posts are all themed around presenting and the blog is following suit!  This article I wrote was recently published in the Toastmasters District 56 Newsletter and I’m happy to share it with you here:

It takes six seconds to form a first impression.

Six seconds!

With such an instantaneous response, your appearance is major factor. From the time you stand to take the stage to the time you say your final word, you are on display.   You’ve spent time practicing your content, it would be a shame for your attire to take away from instead of contribute to your message.

With a little FINESSE you can look great!

FIT – Focus on a proper fit. Jacket: Shoulders should stop where your shoulders stop.  Sleeves: Stop just below wrist bones.  Pants: Fit in waist, long enough for no break, slight break, or full break and no longer.

INTEREST – You want your audience’s attention to be focused toward your face! Create visual interest above the bust line with a necklace, brooch, bow tie, or necktie.

NECKLINE – Wear a top, shirt collar, tie, or blazer with a flattering neckline to your body shape, neck, and face.

EYES – Eye contact is critical. If you wear glasses, make sure the style allows the audience to clearly make eye contact with you. Avoid distracting eye makeup.

SOUND – The sound of silence is golden not only in a well-placed pause but with your
jewelry!  Avoid bracelets that clang together while you are purposefully using body language in your speech.  Likewise, if your earrings tinkle and rustle switch them out.

SHOES – Must be polished! You can ruin a great look with your shoes. Ladies, know how to walk smoothly in your heels of choice.

EASY – Dress in something that reflects your personal style and allows for movement. Avoid overly-complex, layered ensembles.

Just as you practice your speech beforehand, practice your outfit/hair and ask others for feedback! I look forward to seeing your personal finesse on stage. Good luck!
