I had the pleasure of returning to the University of Houston Law School to deliver another fun and information-packed presentation on Dressing for the Interview. I absolutely love speaking to this group; they are so engaged!

Huge THANK YOU to Dillard’s who provided clothing for the presentation and Melissa Sugulas who presented the women’s session!

Similar to last year’s recap, some of the students’ questions are worth revisiting on the blog. Click through to see if you have had the same questions.

Should your socks match your trousers or shoes?

The age old question, right behind do brown or black shoes match this navy suit! The answer? Neither. Your most stylish option is to match your socks to your shirt or tie. If you’re wondering what shirts should be your first purchases, opt for a white and/or blue dress shirt in solid or in a small print or texture.

Interview Style

How many buttons should be buttoned on your jacket?

Men, sometimes you have it so easy. There are clear rules in your fashion world! Never, never leave your suit jacket unbuttoned when standing (unless you are wearing a casual or after hours jacket). Which button should you button? Here’s a handy guide.

Suit Jacket Guide

Is there room to show personality in a conservative suit?

First and foremost, you showing up impeccably dressed even in a conservative style speaks volumes about you, your situational awareness, and your desire for the position. You want the interviewer to remember you as a whole rather than for the amazing cufflinks or colorful tie you were wearing. But if you want to show a bit more of yourself opt for subtle, sophisticated ways to add to your impeccable style such as a nice watch, briefcase, a dose of color in your socks, or by carrying a nice pen.
