Texas-style winters are tough. Typically it doesn’t get *that* cold, except for the few weeks where it does and you are stuck freezing to death trying to figure out how to make a scarf double as a coat. You don’t need a whole closet full of winter clothes to make it through the chill. Tips on key closet items and winter style tips after the jump!

Statement Coat

A statement coat is a winter must. It can give life to your winter basics and keep your look sophisticated. Don’t be afraid of color! If your closet is full of items that look great on you, choosing a coat in one of your best colors means the coat will go with most items in your wardrobe.Natalie Weakly Signature Style Dressing for Texas Winter J Crew Lady Day CoatMore great options (many of which are on sale) below in the Shop the Post section!

Layer, Layer, Layer

This is where things really heat up (couldn’t help it). Optimal number of layers? 3. A thin base layer, mid-weight middle layer, and a heavy third layer. Anymore than that and you’ll look like the stay-puff marshmallow with diminishing returns on comfort.

To keep your look slim even with several layers, layer warm but thin pieces.

Vests

Since our temps stay around the 50s most of the time and Houstonians especially love their heaters, the on-trend fur vests and the always in style puffer vests are great closet additions. Shopping links below!

Layer vests with form-fitting pieces like this tissue-tee turtleneck.

Finish your look with a comfy scarf, opaque tights for your skirts, and of course your favorite boots.

And finally, for my version of a hat trick, flip the top section of your hair to the opposite side before putting your hat on to help with hat hair!

Stay warm out there friends.
