Regardless of your shape and size, we all have something that makes it hard to buy directly off the rack. But be encouraged! You don’t have to wait until said trouble spot disappears, you can look great right now. I had the chance to change up a few lovely ladies’ looks on Great Day Houston this week. Click through for the Dressing Your Body recap including outfit details and a few bonus tips we didn’t have time to cover on air!TV Style Expert Natalie Weakly Great Day Houston Dressing Your Body Intro

Dressing Your Body

You have to watch the segment to see the after looks (you don’t want to miss them!!) but I’ll show you the before shots here!

Problem Area: Thighs

You can still wear white jeans with this trouble spot! The keys are to find a fabric with a bit of stretch but also thick enough to give a smooth look.

We changed several things with her look. In addition to finding the perfect pair of white pants, we found a beautiful top, in an elongating length, to bring attention up and away from the her trouble spot.

Style Tip: Make sure the horizontal lines of your outfit don’t stop at the spot you want to minimize! It will make the area appear wider.

Problem Area: Hips

Hips are natural and completely acceptable ladies! But sometimes they can make it hard to find the perfect jean, skirt, or short. Allison really wanted to find shorts that fit properly (can I get an amen – shorts can be tricky!) so we set out to find the perfect pair and we did!

A slight a-line balances her hips and by keeping the her top slightly blousey she looks tall and lithe and ready for this Houston heat.

Problem Area: Bust

Whether talking bust, hips, or tummy, geometric lines are a tough mix for our curvy shapes. The bust is the one trouble spot where it’s actually more flattering to accentuate through shaping to avoid adding extra pounds to one’s silhouette.

In Loretta’s case we found a great maxi dress that not only gave her shape on top but by clearly defining her bust, we made her waist look smaller! Couple those nice benefits with a lengthening silhouette and she is ready to be her SuperLady self!

Problem Area: Tummy

This one is near and dear to my heart having still not lost all the baby weight. Those of us with tummy trouble spots, it’s a season to avoid the sheath dress!

We switched out this dress with a nearly universally flattering dress, the fit and flare. Couple that with a beautiful print and tummy what?! The best part about the fit and flare is that the style doesn’t require immediate tailoring when you lose a few pounds. It’s a great transitional piece if you are stuck in the in-between!

Problem Area: Petite

Spoiler Alert: My tiny intern starts pulling her weight. ;-)

In speaking engagements I hear tons of questions from petites – how do wear current trends? I can’t pull anything off the rack – what do I do?! I am definitely going to do a full petite post in the future but in the meantime, two style tips for dressing your body shape well:

  • Wear the right-sized print! A large print (see previous model’s runway dress) is going to dominate a petite’s shape whereas a small print is perfectly scaled to a petite’s body.
  • Column-style dressing will always give you the most height. Column-style means keeping your outfit (or the center of your outfit if you pair with a blazer or cardigan) all one print/color like my very petite model is wearing.
